BFGoodrich All-Terrain KDR2+

The BFGoodrich® All Terrain T/A KDR2+’s tread pattern was carefully
conceived with the emphasis on its ability to clear sand when driving
over dunes. To achieve this, its design is particularly very open, most
notably along the shoulders. This allows the tyre to generate greater
traction, while limiting the risk of getting stuck on softer or looser
ground. The BFGoodrich® All Terrain T/A KDR2+ will be available in a choice of two compounds (soft and medium) and two sizes:

16 inches (245/80-16), for all-wheel drive vehicles
17 inches (37/12.5-17), for two-wheel-drive buggies.



BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3

The Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 is available to the general public.
It was developed – like all BFGoodrich® tyres – with the benefit of
experience acquired in the field. At home on sand and mud alike, and designed to both scale the steepest
slopes and cope effectively with dunes, its breeding makes it
the perfect companion for amateur competitors.

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 SSV 

This version of the BFGoodrich® KM3 is designed for recreational and
competitive Side by Side use. After being successfully put through its paces on a variety
of cross-country rallies, the BFGoodrich® KM3 SSV is the tyre of choice for numerous participants on the 2021 Dakar, while also being available for purchase. This means users of these new BFGoodrich®products can enjoy the full benefit of the brand’s latest technologies, while running on the same tyres as Dakar competitors when they venture off-road.

For you, what are the criteria for a high-performance off-road competition tyre? 

A high performance off-road competition tyre meets 3 main criteria: it must be  
- Resistant: a competition tyre must be extremely resistant. It must be resistant to shocks, punctures and must allow the driver to overcome obstacles as easily as possible. 
- Fast: The tyre must also allow the driver to be fast, which requires us to work on a high-performance grip that grips the terrain well but does not slow down the racer. 
- Adapted to the terrain: Finally, it must be perfectly adapted to the particularities of the competition terrain

Tyre composition:

  • Sidewall plies (in beige) : to support the load and protect
  • Liner (in pink) : to preserve the air 
  • Rigid bead (in blue) : to attach the tyre to the wheel 
  • Tread plies (in gold) to guid and protect

Interview of Luc, BFGoodrich's representative on the Dakar

What do you remember about your first Dakar?

My first real Dakar was in 2019, the last edition in South America. I have very positive memories because the Dakar was a race that I watched on TV when I was a kid and that still makes you dream. It's the ultimate off-road competition where big teams compete with big means.

What is your role on the Dakar? 

I'm here to talk about products, answer interviews, talk about the technical aspects of tyres in competition. With BFGoodrich, we are at the service of performance, knowing that we equip the vast majority of the field today.

So what is the big challenge for you with BFGoodrich tyres on the Dakar? 

The BFGoodrich tyre has to meet three big challenges on the Dakar, challenges of speed, versatility and resistance. We really saw a change between South America, where the race was much faster with fewer crossings and fairly high speed peaks, and Saudi Arabia with more obstacles and crossings. The sand part was less important than we imagined on the last Dakar. 

What was your best memory of the Dakar? 

It was to have been able to see these vehicles which are racing beasts on wide open spaces with extreme performance in extreme conditions. Seeing these vehicles in extremely demanding positions, challenges and terrains with highly committed drivers who take huge risks to win. These are vehicles in ultimate challenge, incredible landscapes and impressive performance. 

A prediction for 2021?

Very difficult to say, victory should still be decided between the two major teams. They both have their trump cards. What's more, their vehicles will necessarily have evolved compared to the last few seasons. We must also take into account the outsiders such as the return of Sébastien Loeb!

If you had to describe BFG and the Dakar?

First of all, it's a long story. We have accumulated victories with several different partners and drivers: for BFGoodrich, the Dakar is the best terrain for expression because it is the ultimate conditions for a brand that wants to be ultimate.
